Next month, Google will delete millions of Gmail accounts. Why is this so?

The policy only applies to personal Google accounts that have not used Gmail in the last two years.

Gmail users who do not use their accounts regularly may lose access to their accounts in the coming month. Millions of Gmail accounts may be erased in December 2023 as part of a process designed to deactivate accounts that have been inactive for at least two years.

Ruth Kricheli, Google Vice President of Product Management, wrote about the company's efforts to reduce the risk in a blog post in May. Google is increasing the inactivity period for Google Accounts to two years across all of our products. Beginning in December, if a Google account has not been used or signed into for at least two years, we reserve the right to erase the account and its contents, including anything within Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar), and Google Photos.

"This is because forgotten or unattended accounts often rely on old or re-used passwords that may have been compromised, haven't had two-factor authentication set up, and receive fewer security checks by the user," according to the blog post.

"According to our internal research, abandoned accounts are at least 10 times less likely than active accounts to have two-step verification enabled." These accounts are frequently insecure, and if stolen, they can be used for anything from identity theft to a channel for undesired or malicious content, such as spam."

Who is in danger?

The policy will only apply to those who haven't accessed their Gmail account in two years. It won't have any effect on accounts for businesses or schools.

Leave a message. If you have an active subscription tied to your Google account, like Google One, a news source, or an app, Google will notice that you are still using your account. Your account will not be changed in any way. Also, Google has no plans to delete accounts that are linked to YouTube movies right now.
